Lithuanian Prime Minister Algirdas Butkyavichus is on official visit to Turkmenistan (June17-18), Turkmen media reported on Tuesday.

It is expected that the head of the Lithuanian government will hold talks today with the President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov.

Butkyavichus arrived in the country yesterday and visited one of the largest industrial, transport and resort centres of Turkmenistan, the city of Turkmenbashi. The delegation visited the international sea port, where they became acquainted with the port's infrastructure, the progress in its modernisation, technical re-equipment and development prospects.

According to an article published in the Neutral Turkmenistan newspaper, the port already serves as a major transportation hub in the Caspian region and this role could increase with the implementation of projects for the creation of Eurasian international corridors providing freight on optimal routes. It relates to the route connecting the Caspian, Black and Baltic Seas which will be linked to the China - Central Asia - Caucasus - Europe transcontinental route that lies across the Caspian Sea.

New offshore terminals with berths capable of receiving vessels of any type and capacity will be built on the Turkmen coast of the Caspian Sea. A logistics centre with warehouses for processing and storage of goods in transit and export and import operations will also be built along with a base for the repair of ships and a passenger terminal.

Turkmenistan has been actively re-equipping its merchant fleet over the past five years. It was joined by five powerful tankers for the transport of crude oil and petroleum products as well as various chemical products. In the short term, two 'river-sea' oil tankers as well as two car and passenger ferries will be added to the fleet.

According to Turkmen dovlet khabarlary, the Lithuanian prime minister also visited the Turkmenbashi oil refinery which produces a wide range of products that are in demand on the world markets. These are high-octane, unleaded motor gasoline, aviation kerosene, hydro treated diesel fuel, petroleum coke, polypropylene and a wide range of technical lubricants.

This refinery is the region's largest exporter of liquefied natural gas storage for which shipments for road, rail and marine terminals were constructed. Work in this direction is on-going.
