General economic situation in Azerbaijan (January-February 2017)

Azerbaijan’s GDP was 10.04 billion manat in January-February 2017, that is, 0.4 percent more than in the same period of 2016, according to the country’s State Statistics Committee.

The non-oil GDP reached 5.7 billion manat and its share in Azerbaijan’s GDP was 56.8 percent in January-February 2017.

The non-oil GDP increased by 2.3 percent over the year.

Value-added production in oil and gas extraction and refining was 43.2 percent of the GDP, that is, 4.3 billion manat.

GDP per capita reached almost 1.04 billion manat.

During the reporting period, 46.7 percent (4.7 billion manat) of Azerbaijan’s GDP accounted for industry, 7.6 percent (763.2 million manat) for construction, 2.7 percent (271.15 million manat) for agriculture, forestry and fishery.

Net taxes on production and import accounted for 6.5 percent of Azerbaijan’s GDP.

According to the report, 9.6 percent of the services GDP (964.1 million manat) accounted for vehicle trade and repair, 6.7 percent (672.85 million manat) for transportation and warehousing, 2.7 percent (271.15 million manat) for tourist accommodation and catering, 1.7 percent (170.72 million manat) for information and communication services, and 15.8 percent (1.6 billion manat) for other services.

The transport sector was the most dynamic sector in Azerbaijan in January-February 2017.

According to the State Statistics Committee, as of January-February 2017, value added worth 674.2 million manat was observed in the sector or by 6.6 percent more than the sectoral GDP.

The transport sector in the reporting period surpassed such sectors as hospitality and food, where GDP reached 266.8 million manat, increasing by 0.4 percent compared to January-February 2016.

Industrial goods worth 6.5 billion manat were produced in Azerbaijan in January-February 2017, which is by 3.7 percent less than in the same period of 2016.

The volume of production in the non-oil sector increased by 5 percent, but decreased by 5.1 percent in the oil sector.

Azerbaijan’s metallurgical industry and enterprises producing finished goods from metal produced goods worth 87.4 million manat in January-February 2017.

The report says that the output volume of metallurgical industry increased by 23 percent and the production of finished goods decreased by 11 percent in January-February 2017.

Azerbaijan produced 45,300 tons of fittings in January-February 2017 that is by 71.7 percent more than in the same period of 2016.

The agricultural production volume in actual prices amounted to 497.2 million manat in Azerbaijan in January-February 2017 or by 3.2 percent more compared to the same period of 2016.

According to the Azerbaijani State Statistics Committee’s report, the crop production increased by 28.8 percent and reached 10.2 million manat, livestock production – 2.8 percent and reached 487 million manat in the reporting period.

According to the State Statistics Committee, as of January-February 2017, 6.3 billion manat accounted for the Azerbaijani consumer market, which is by 0.5 percent more than its turnover for January-February 2016.

The monthly consumer expenses are estimated at 325.8 manat per capita in January-February 2017 or by 35.9 manat more compared to January-February 2016.

According to the State Statistics Committee, the prices on consumer goods and tariffs for services increased by 1.6 percent in February 2017 compared to January 2017.

The food prices increased by 2.5 percent, non-food items - by 0.9 percent, paid services – 1 percent in Azerbaijan during the reporting period.

The foreign trade turnover with 137 world countries amounted to $2.63 billion in January-February 2017, or by 20.09 percent more than in the same period of 2016.

The volume of exports increased by 36.64 percent and amounted to $1.65 billion in January-February 2017 compared to January-February 2016. The volume of import decreased by 0.44 percent and reached $971.97 million.

Azerbaijan maintained a black ink of foreign trade balance in January-February 2017, which was facilitated by the foreign trade growth.

According to the Azerbaijani State Statistics Committee, 2,093.7 million manat was invested from all financial sources in the development of the economic and social areas of Azerbaijan in January-February 2017, which is by 5.7 percent more than in January-February 2016.

According to the report, 89.2 percent of investments in fixed assets were made in the construction of production facilities, 8.1 percent - non-production facilities, 2.7 percent - housing construction.

According to the Azerbaijani State Statistics Committee, the nominal income of the population totaled 6.9 million manat in January-February 2017, which is by 4.7 percent more compared to January-February 2016.

Thus, during the reporting period, the nominal income of the population per capita increased by 3.6 percent and reached 719.8 manat.

As of March 1, 2017, some 35,100 people were officially registered as unemployed in Azerbaijan, including 37.7 percent women.

According to the report, the number of unemployed increased by 14.7 percent in the country compared to the same period of 2016.

The average rate of manat to the U.S. dollar was 1.79 manat versus dollar, to euro – 1.90 manat versus euro, to Russian rouble – 3.06 manat versus 100 rouble in January-February 2017.
