The eastern part of Libya was likely to suffer a food security crisis within two months, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said here Tuesday, Xinhua reported.
OCHA spokesperson Elisabeth Byrs said stocks of food, water and some medical supplies in most parts of Libya were barely sufficient for one to two months.
If the crisis continued, she said, existing social safety networks would be depleted, further diminishing the coping capacities.
The U.N. has increased its humanitarian assistance to address the mounting need for basic supplies in Libya.
A ship chartered by the U.N.'s World Food Program (WFP) delivered more than 500 tons of food, as well medical supplies to the Libyan town of Misrata on Saturday.
