The United Nations emergency relief coordinator said Wednesday Damascus had repeatedly turned down her requests to visit for talks on the humanitarian situation there, dpa reported.
Valerie Amos said she had made repeated requests to visit Syria in the past two weeks so she could discuss unhindered access by the UN to people affected by the violence with government officials.
She had been asked by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to go to Syria as soon as possible, she said.
"Given the rapidly deteriorating humanitarian situation, with an increasing need for medical assistance, food and basic supplies, improving access, so that assistance can reach those in urgent need, is a matter of the highest priority," she added.
