Former Polish president Lech Walesa said he would consider returning to politics after President Lech Kaczynski died in an air crash last week, in an interview published in Germany Saturday.

"If the fatherland needs me, and my compatriots want it, then I am ready anytime," the 66-year-old Nobel peace prize laureate told Focus news magazine.

However, the former Solidarity leader said that he "would not take the initiative."

Walesa said he had initially opposed the idea of burying Kaczynski and his wife in Krakow's Wawel Cathedral, which was a national burial site for monarchs and other important political figures in the Middle Ages, DPA reported.

"There are far more suitable places in Warsaw or in Gdansk, where Maria and Lech Kaczynski lived for a long time," Walesa said.

Since the church had already made its decision, he said, "I have to accept it."
