Azerbaijan, Baku, 1 May / corr. Trend I. Alizade/ The Bill on Basis for Military Call would not undergo any changes that could enable the holders of masters and post graduate degrees not to be called up for the military service. "There are no any discussions in the Azerbaijani parliament on changes to the Bill on Basis for Military Call," said to Trend Zahid Oruj, the member of standing parliament committee on defence and security of Azerbaijan and also an MP.

The Azerbaijani parliament made changes to the Bill on Basis for Military Service in early 2007. According to changes, the draft deferment for post graduates and masters degree holders was canceled.

Some 500 people are admitted to the post graduate courses in a year, with youth accounting for 250 of them.

Abel Maharramov, the member of standing parliament commission on science and education and rector of Baku State University said that the parliament would consider the military service of holders of masters and post graduate degrees once again. "The military call to the holders of masters and post graduate degrees impedes the development of science. At present, a draft bill is being developed on the draft of holders of masters and post graduate degrees," said Maharramov.

Mahmud Karimov, the president of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan also believes that holders of masters and post graduate degrees should not be drafted for army.

"The holders of masters and post graduate degrees will not be given draft deferment as it has been canceled in line with the changes made to the related Bill. The Bill can not undergo new changes," MP said.

The administration and military legislation department of the parliament said that no work is being carried out on changes to the Bill on Basis for Military Call.
