The Azerbaijani Economic Development Ministry launched activities to educate local businesses and encourage Azerbaijani exports to Europe under the "Generalized System of Preferences" (GSP +) program, Project Manager Rachel McGowan said at a seminar in Baku today. The activities are implemented with the EU's "Economic Development Ministry Support" project.

"One of the project's main objectives is to support Azerbaijani exporters in entering European markets, educate them in this area and increase exports," she said.

According to the project manager, GSP + will launch a series of seminars for entrepreneurs in Baku and the regions to inform them about how to best access foreign markets.

"We plan to hold seminars in Sumgayit, Ganja and Guba Nov. 20-25," she said. "As the export volume of Azerbaijani goods to Europe today is low, the program's goal is to bring information to employers on how to export and the advantages of doing so."

According to McGowan, seminars will also be held in Nakhchivan, Lankaran and Sheki in early 2010.

Department head at the Economic Development Ministry Samir Valiyev said the country's GDP grew 8.3 percent over 10 months due to an increase in non-oil exports and various reforms to the state enterprise development program. In his view, the program, run in conjunction with the EU, will eliminate difficulties facing local entrepreneurs when exporting goods.
