Malaysia and Turkmenistan have great potential for cooperation development, Malaysian Prime Minister Mohammad Najib bin Tun Haji Abdul Razak said in his message to Gurbanguly Berdimuhammadov on his re-election to the second term as Turkmen president.
"I am confident that under Your Excellency's efficient leadership, the Turkmen people will continue to go the way of peace, progress and prosperity," the letter says.
Abdul Razak also expressed confidence that "bilateral relations which have become significantly enhanced will continue to deepen".
"Malaysia and Turkmenistan have great potential for cooperation. In addition to the operation of the Petronas Company, I look forward to a closer partnership in other spheres of cooperation between our two countries," he underscored.
In previous years, Malaysia's interest in the Turkmen market has been associated primarily with the activities of the state oil company Petronas Charigali, operating in the Turkmen sector of Caspian Sea since 1996.
The company started commercial production and export of oil in Turkmenistan in May 2006. The crude is transported through Azerbaijan and Iran. Recently natural gas production came on-stream and transportation is possible both on the traditional route to Russia, as well as on the projected route to Europe via the Caspian Sea and Azerbaijan.
