Turkmenistan, Iran resume cargo transportation via trucks

BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 23

By Jeila Aliyeva - Trend:

Turkmenistan has allowed 30 out of 770 Iranian trucks to enter its territory said representative of the customs service of Iran Rouhollah Latif, Trend reports with reference to Arzuw News.

These trucks were detained on April 1 at the namesake cities of Sarakhs on the two sides of Turkmen-Iranian border due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Another 131 trucks are still on the Incheh Boroun customs checkpoint on the Iran-Turkmenistan border, while 6 trucks are on the Lotfabad border checkpoint.

Iran and Turkmenistan kept their borders closed due to the coronavirus pandemic, however, the parties discussed issues of increasing transport traffic during a videoconference in early May.

New bridge opened to connect namesake cities of Sarakhs on the two sides of Turkmen-Iranian border. This was the second joint border development project on construction of automobile bridges between the two countries aiming to expand and develop road transportation.

Currently, Turkmenistan has no registered cases of coronavirus infection.

The outbreak in the Chinese city of Wuhan - which is an international transport hub - began at a fish market in late December 2019.

The World Health Organization (WHO) on March 11 declared COVID-19 a pandemic. Some sources claim the coronavirus outbreak started as early as November 2019.
