BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan, June 17. The Ministry of Economy of Kyrgyzstan has initiated public discussion on a draft resolution proposing a six-month extension of the ban on the export of scrap metal, waste, and ingots of ferrous metals from the country, Trend reports.

The resolution seeks to prevent a critical scarcity of raw materials for domestic processing companies and promote local processing manufacturing. Only five big companies have foundries in the country.

Data from the National Statistical Committee shows that Kyrgyzstan exported scrap metal and waste only to Russia from January through March 2024, totaling 5 tons.

In 2023, the country imported 234.4 tons of scrap metal and waste, 228.2 tons from EAEU countries (mainly Russia), and 6.2 tons from other parties. January–March 2024 saw no scrap metal or waste imports.

The Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan initially imposed a complete ban on the export of scrap and waste ferrous metals through a resolution dated January 16, 2023. This measure has been periodically extended to date to support domestic production and economic stability.
