The EU acknowledges the European choice of Georgia. It welcomes the efforts to conduct reforms and underlines the great importance of fair parliamentary and presidential elections. It declares that it will closely monitor the events in the country during the pre-election period, the EU Foreign Ministers' statement, adopted on February 27, said.
"The EU underlines the importance for the parliamentary elections in 2012 and presidential elections in 2013 to be conducted in accordance with internationally recognized democratic standards," the statement said. The EU will closely monitor the events before the elections in Georgia."
The document also highlights the need to strengthen democratic institutions in Georgia. This will allow creating a genuinely pluralistic political sphere that will ensure freedom of assembly, as well as further strengthening the independence of the judicial system.
The meeting of foreign ministers of 27 EU countries took place in Brussels on Monday. The main attention was paid to the events in Syria. Moreover, the situation in the South Caucasus countries was considered.
