Iraqi Kurdish fighters, also known as Peshmerga, along with volunteer forces have driven out ISIL Takfiri militants of an area near the northern city of Tikrit, PressTV reported.

Reports said on Thursday that the Kurdish fighters and volunteer forces began an operation against the ISIL Takfiris, or Daesh in Arabic, in the Zerga area in the province of Salahuddin on Wednesday.

"Intelligence information indicated the presence of Daesh members in this area, therefore we launched an operation and managed to seize the area and force the Daesh terrorists to flee," said Peshmerga Brigadier Omar Saleh.

The Kurdish fighters with the assistance of the Iraqi army and volunteers have had the upper hand in their fight against the Takfiri terrorists over the past few months.

Earlier this month, the Peshmerga forces backed by Iraqi army and the volunteers managed to flush out the ISIL terrorists from the Iraqi towns of Rabia, Zumar and Mahmoudiyah.

The Iraqis have regained control of much land captured by the ISIL in recent months.

Military authorities said the army launched a major operation in the district of Karma near the city of Fallujah in Anbar province on Wednesday and pushed out the terrorists from three areas. The army also managed to break a siege by the ISIL militants on hundreds of soldiers in eastern Ramadi, the Anbar provincial capital, security sources added.

Anbar province has been a major stronghold of the ISIL terrorists and continues to be largely controlled by the Takfiri group.

The ISIL militants made swift advances in much of northern and western Iraq over the summer, after capturing large swathes of territory in neighboring Syria.
