Moldova will benefit from 50 million euros in financial assistance from the European Commission in 2008-2009, with the assistance due to significantly increase subsequently provided that Moldova successfully collaborates with the European structures, reported Moldpres.
The head of the political and economic section of the European Commission's Delegation in Moldova, Paolo Berizzi, made a statement to this effect at the opening of a photo exhibition entitled The European Union and Moldova: Achievements and prospects, staged at EuroFotoArt Salon, on 30 April - 16 May.
The proceeds are to be used to carry out and promote more infrastructure projects in Moldova, Berizzi said. He specified that the overall amount the European Community provided Moldova with since 1991 stands at about 450 million euros.
Berizzi said that this points to the constructive cooperation between the European Commission and Moldova, and is proof to the wish of the European Union to develop all of Moldova's social sectors. The community structures do not aim at allotting Moldova as much money as possible to solve the problems it faces, but to consolidate the reforms carried out by the Government, the official added.
Speaking of the photo exhibition, Paolo Berizzi stressed its importance in the context of Europe Day, which is marked on 8 May. The exhibition displays the main activities of EU projects in Moldova, among which the EU Border Assistance Mission to Moldova and Ukraine, the aid given to lessen the consequences of the disastrous drought in 2007, the agreements on visa facilitation and readmission, and the EU additional autonomous trade preferences, Berizzi concluded.
