Hundreds of insurgents attacked a police base near the capital of a north-eastern Afghan province Tuesday, sparking a fierce battle, officials said, DPA reported.
About 400 insurgents took part in the assault, which began Tuesday morning and was ongoing, said Aziz Rahman Zahid, the police chief of Nuristan province.
He said two police officers were injured after the militants began firing rocket-propelled grenades and small arms on the police reserve base, located 18 kilometres from the provincial capital, Parun.
"There are no Afghan army or coalition forces in the area," Zahid said. "We are trying to send police reinforcements from other districts."
Taliban-led insurgents are active in the mountainous province, where they captured the Waigal district this year.
Fighting also has continued for a week in the Wama district, said Abdul Ghafoor Amin, senior provincial official. Three Taliban have been killed and six police officers injured, he said.
Tuesday's assault came two days after more than two dozen Taliban fighters, including suicide bombers, attacked several government buildings in the southern city of Kandahar. Four people and all of the attackers were killed in the firefight, which lasted more than 30 hours.
