National Coordinators to Develop Documents for GUAM Summit

Azerbaijan, Baku, 2 May / Trend corr S. Agayeva/ "National coordinators of the Organization for Democracy and Economic Development - GUAM will develop documents for the summit of heads of the GUAM countries," Sabuhi Tamirov, Azerbaijan's permanent representative in GUAM, said to Trend on 2 May. The meeting of the national coordinators from Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova will take place in Kishinev on 13 May.

The deputy foreign ministers of the four countries will discuss preparation for the presidential summit, to take place in Tbilisi in June. At the summit, Azerbaijan will transfer the chairmanship of organization to Georgia.  

Four post-Soviet republics; Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova, established the GUAM format in 1997 during a summit of presidents of European Union countries in Strasburg. In 1999, Uzbekistan joined the organization but left four years later. In 2006, at the first summit of the organization in Kiev a decision was made to announce GUAM as an international organization with a new name; Organization for Democracy and Economic Development - GUAM.
