Azerbaijan, Baku, 21 May /corr. Trend E.Tanriverdiyeva, R.Hafizoglu / The African Union, which brings together 52 states, may not only mediate in long-years conflict between Sudan and Chad, but also protect Khartoum from interference of N'Djamena. "It would be much better if the African Union, in addition to regulation of conflict between the two countries, would hold talks with Chad regarding non-interference in affairs of Sudan," said an official of Sudan Parliament, Zubeir Osman Ahmad.
The African Union acts as mediator between Chad and Sudan to regulate the conflict between the two countries. This meeting will take place at the end of May in Egypt, Al-Jazair TV channel reported on 18 May.
"Sudan does not oppose the African Union's mediation between N'Djamena and Khartoum. However, still there is a time for mediation and there is no need to be in hurry," Ahmad reported to Trend over telephone from Khartoum on 20 May. Repeatedly agreements were signed between Sudan and Chad on settlement of this conflict. However, unfortunately Chad did not fulfill its obligations taken before Sudan, the MP said. "Tension between Chad and Sudan is the initiative of Chad. I think that the Government of Chad will have to stop political and financial support to its separatists, understanding the scale of the project," Ahmad said.
The African Union should try to mediate between Sudan and Chad and probably will make the effort. On the surface, the African Union will likely achieve some success, said American politician David Shinn.
"That is to say, Chad and Sudan will agree to some formula for reestablishing peaceful relations as they have done many times before," Professor of George Washington University, Shinn, reported to Trend via e-mail on 20 May.
He said that the problem is that there are serious problems between the two countries and a complex situation along their lengthy border where ethnic groups like the Zaghawa live in both countries.
According to him, Sudan's Darfur conflict has further complicated the relationship between Chad and Sudan. There is also a long history whereby the governments in Ndjamena and Khartoum have supported rebel movements operating across the border in the other country. "It will be difficult to resolve these long-standing issues through the mediation of the African Union or any other organization," he said, adding that about the best one can hope for is an agreement that temporarily reduces or eliminates any violence encouraged or even incited by the other country. "I would not expect this positive development to last permanently," he added.
The African Union is a regional international intergovernmental organization established in May 2001. One of the key principles of the African Union is to respect borders of the organization member-countries.
United contingent of the UNO troops and African Union have been located in Darfur since 2007 to settle Sudan-Chad conflict. According to the joint plan of these organizations, priority attention should be paid to the political processes, stopping violence, restoring security and strengthening ceasefire regime.
