The foundation of the Maritime Operations Control Center was laid on Tuesday in Supsa (Guria region, Western Georgia) with financial support from the U.S.

"Maritime Operations Control Center is a unique facility in the Black Sea basin designed to combat trafficking and crime through interagency cooperation," the U.S. embassy said.

The U.S. government has provided funding of $1.2 million for the center in the framework of the program for export control and border security.

"Maritime Operations Control Center will improve maritime safety of Georgia as a transit country," according to the embassy.

U.S. Ambassador Richard Norland and Georgia's Interior Minister Irakli Garibashvili, who laid the foundation for construction of the Maritime Operations Control Center, opened in Poti the workshop for repair of the Coast Guard vessels the same day.

This facility received the funding from the office of the program for export control and border security in the sum of $6 million. Its construction began in 2011.
