BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 30. Approximately 70 percent of emissions in Azerbaijan are attributed to the energy sector, Chief Executive Officer of COP29 and Azerbaijan's Deputy Minister of Energy Elnur Soltanov said at an international conference held as part of the Baku Climate Action Week, Trend reports.

"In general, greenhouse gas emissions contributing to surface temperature increases are primarily caused by the energy sector, accounting for 70 percent globally. About 20 percent of emissions come from agriculture, roughly 5 percent from industry, and around 3 to 4 percent from waste. About 70 percent of emissions in Azerbaijan are also related to the energy sector," he noted.

Soltanov emphasized that Azerbaijan is throwing out the old playbook and bringing in the new, swapping outdated Soviet-era power plants for modern, high-efficiency ones that are sure to light up the future.

"We are actively greening our existing capacities. While we are replacing old plants, we are currently not constructing any gas power plants. Instead, we are focused on building renewable energy facilities, many of which are the first and largest in the region, and we plan to significantly increase their number by the end of this decade.

I believe that by the year 2030, developed countries will produce up to 80 percent of their electricity from renewable sources. This is impressive. By 2035, some countries aiming for 100 percent will face significant challenges, but I believe it is theoretically possible," he added.
