Akbar Torkan has been appointed secretary of Iran's Centre for Free and Special Economic Zones (CFSEZ), Mehr news agency reported.
Torkan who is replacing Hamid Baghaee is also Senior Adviser to President Hassan Rouhani.
He is also caretaker of four entities including the High Council of the Iranian Affairs Abroad, NAM (the Non-Aligned Movement) Secretariat and the Iranian Space Agency.
Torkan had served as the minister of defence under ex-president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani (1989 to 1997).
He was Advisor to Rouhani during his presidential campaign.
