BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 28. Natural gas serves as the main fuel for power generation in Azerbaijan, accounting for up to 90 percent of the total fuel used in the country's power generation facilities, Trend reports referring to the data of the World Bank (WB).
The remaining 10 percent of fuel is sourced from water, wind, solar power, and domestic and industrial waste incineration.
The WB's document also delineated the categories of electricity consumers within the country.
Consequently, the largest electricity consumers are the residential sector (30 percent of total electricity consumption) and the service sector (29 percent).
Energy sectors also exhibit substantial electricity consumption (14 percent), while agriculture accounts for 5 percent and transportation for 2 percent.
"Tariffs for consumers typically remain below the cost recovery level for electricity generation and distribution (averaging $0.058 per kWh by the end of 2022). Gas supplies to thermal power plants (TPPs), the cornerstone of the nation's energy system, are subsidized. Capital expenditures are not factored into calculating electricity tariffs," WB says.
To note, the total installed capacity of Azerbaijan's energy system is 7.6 GW, with plans to incorporate at least 1 GW of electricity from renewable energy sources by 2030.
The expansion of renewable energy sources' share in the country's energy portfolio aims to achieve a 35 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 compared to 1990 levels.
