Active work on construction of Obigarm-Nurobod highway underway in Tajikistan - ADB

BAKU, Azerbaijan, December 12. To support the Government of Tajikistan to construct the Obigarm-Nurobod highway, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in December 2019 approved a $110 million grant, a source in ADB told Trend.

According to the ADB office in Tajikistan, the project became effective in July 2020 and is planned for completion by end of 2024.

"There were some delays in project implementation due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the project works are now well ongoing," the ADB in Tajikistan noted.

ADB and the OPEC Fund for International Development cofinance section of Obigarm-Tagikamar road of about 30 km, including 2 tunnels of 1.6 km and of 1.7 km. In addition, it also includes the rehabilitation of 11 village access roads of about 30 km to improve the connectivity of local communities

"The Obigarm-Nurobod road project is a strategic priority for the Government of Tajikistan, both from the national and regional perspectives. The road is part of important international corridors, while also providing access to economic opportunities and social services for 17 villages and communities," the ADB in Tajikistan said.

Hunan Road & Bridge Construction Company from China is the main civil work contractor; JV Temelsu LTD & CTI (Türkiye-Japan) is the construction supervision consultant, and Dainichi Inc. company from Japan is the project management consultant.

Since Tajikistan joined the bank in 1998, ADB assisted Tajikistan in rehabilitating over 700 km of key road corridors in the country, piloting performance-based maintenance, developing a road asset management system, improving road safety, rehabilitating key border crossing points, and developing a national single window system.
