Director of Georgian National Centre for Disease Control and Public Health Amiran Gamkrelidze said that the statements of the head of Russian Federal Service on Customers' Rights Protection and Human Well-Being Surveillance (Rospotrebnadzor) Gennady Onishchenko about the activity of an American laboratory in Georgia do not correspond to reality.
Last week Onishchenko stated that this laboratory represents a threat to Russia from the point of view of spreading infectious diseases.
"This is a high level scientific laboratory that has many directions. Highly qualified specialists are working at the site. After Russia's statements we invited Russian experts who carried out a monitoring in the laboratory and they were very satisfied with its results. There is no biological weapon and no secret activity is being carried out in the laboratory. Any expert, specialist, scientist can visit the laboratory and personally verify this," Gamkrelidze told journalists on Monday.
Earlier Georgia has presented full information on the activity of the laboratory to the Russia side. Moreover the Russian scientists have twice visited the laboratory.
According to Georgian Prime Minister's Special Representative for Relations with Russia Zurab Abashidze, the Russian scientists have expressed their satisfaction with the high level of work in the laboratory.
