Pro-Gaddafi Chavez criticizes US, European states on Libya

Arab World Materials 22 August 2011 16:51 (UTC +04:00)

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez criticized the position of the United States and several European states on the conflict in Libya, DPA reported.

"The supposedly 'democratic' United States and the European governments - not all, but everyone knows which - are destroying all of Tripoli with bombs, because they are profiting from it," Chavez said, speaking at a church service in Caracas on Monday (Sunday local time).

Expressing continued support for Moamer Gaddafi against the rebels, Venezuela's president said that Western governments would "without accountability" spur on a massacre and destroy schools, homes and hospitals.

"They say they're dropping bombs to save civilians. That is only an excuse to intervene."

Chavez spoke after recovery from a cancer operation.
