Amnesty International on Thursday called for an independent inquiry into the circumstances of the death of Moamer Gaddafi and urged his successors to end the "culture of abuse", dpa reported.

In a statement released in London, the international rights group called on the National Transitional Council (NTC) to publish the full facts of Gaddafi's death after conducting an "independent and impartial inquiry."

Those facts should be made available to the Libyan people, said the statement.

Amnesty also called for the "many Libyan officials" suspected of having committed serious human rights violations "during and before this year's uprising" to be brought to justice.

It added that the new authorities in Libya "must make a complete break from the culture of abuse" under the Gaddafi regime and initiate the human rights reforms the country urgently needed.

Amnesty called on the NTC to ensure that all those suspected of human rights abuses and war crimes, including Gaddafi's inner circle and family members, were treated humanely and, if captured, given fair trials.
