The UN Human Rights Council in Geneva was set to adopt a new resolution condemning the Syrian regime, diplomats said Tuesday, in an emergency debate on the violent unrest in the country was taking place, DPA reported.
The draft text referred to arbitrary executions and killings of demonstrators, torture and sexual violence. It called on the regime of President Bashar al-Assad to stop attacking civilians and allow humanitarian groups to operate.
"If the session of today aims at guaranteeing humanitarian assistance, the Human Rights Council is not the appropriate forum," Syria's ambassador Faysal Khabbaz Hamoui said.
Arab countries and Turkey drafted the resolution, which would be the fourth such decision by the Geneva-based council.
UN human rights chief Navi Pillay said that in the past two weeks, she had "received disturbing reports of a rapidly deteriorating human rights and humanitarian situation."
She reiterated her call for the International Criminal Court to take up the issue of Syria.
