UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Wednesday condemned the bombings of civilian targets in Darfur as "unacceptable."

"The secretary general strongly deplores these acts, which targeted civilian areas, including locations where children congregate," said spokeswoman Marie Okabe, the dpa reported.

The UN said the attacks were aimed at civilian locations in North Darfur, including a school, water installations and a market in the villages of Um Sidir, Ein Bassar and Shegeg Karo. It said UN-African Union peacekeepers helped to evacuate those injured by the attacks.

Okabe said Ban was concerned by increasing acts of banditry, which complicate humanitarian operations and impede the peacekeepers' ability to carry out their mandate.

Ban renewed his demands for the warring parties to cease all hostilities, ensure the protection of civilians, work with the UN-AU peace force to promote security and commit to the peace process.
