The foreign minister of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) arrived in Baghdad for a previously-unannounced visit Thursday, the first of its kind since the collapse of Iraq's former regime in 2003, according to an Iraqi official, reported dpa.
Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayyid al-Nahyan arrived in Baghdad at the invitation of Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari for talks about resuming full diplomatic ties between UAE and Iraq, government spokesman Ali al-Dabagh told the Voices of Iraq news agency.
The UAE embassy is to be reopened, al-Dabagh said.
The Gulf country recalled its ambassador to Iraq after militants abducted one of its diplomats two years ago. The diplomat was later released.
