Strong quake off Indonesia's Java, tsunami warning lifted

A strong quake struck off the southern coast of Indonesia's Java island early Monday, but officials said there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties, dpa reported.

The quake, measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale, prompted a tsunami warning with officials telling residents to stay away from shorelines. But the alert was lifted more than an hour later after no tidal waves materialized.

The quake's epicentre was in the Indian Ocean, about 293 kilometres south-west of Cilacap in Central Java and 437 kilometres south-east of Jakarta, said Indonesia's Meteorology, Geophysics and Climatology Agency (BMKG). It struck at 3:06 am (2006 GMT Sunday) at a depth of 10 kilometres, the agency said.

The USGS recorded the quake at a weaker 6.7 on the Richter scale.

"A tsunami warning had been canceled after no tidal wave took place following the quake," said Djabar, the BMKG's spokesman, who like many Indonesians uses only one name.

Residents of Cilacap, a district town on the southern coast of Central Java, many of whom were still asleep when the quake struck, ran out their homes in panic, reported news website detik.com.

The quake was also felt as far away as Yogyakarta and the capital city of Jakarta.

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties from the quake, the latest of a series earthquake to hit Indonesia in recent months, officials said.
