Pakistan remained under the dark garb of terrorism during the year 2008-2010 as 3,169 people lost their lives in 2,488 incidents of bomb blasts across the country, local media reported on Saturday quoting official data.
According to a report presented to the Senate by Pakistani Interior Minister Rehman Malik, 3,169 persons were killed while 6, 540 others got injured in 2,488 incidents of bomb blasts including suicide bombings across the country during the years 2008-2009 and 2009-2010, the private TV channel Express reported.
The report said 606 accused were arrested during the same period in the backdrop of these terrorist acts, while courts acquitted 352 accused giving benefit of doubt, Xinhua reported.
Pakistan's northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa bordering the tribal area and Afghanistan remained most prone to terrorism where 1,524 people lost their lives and 4,463 people sustained injuries in 716 attacks during the years 2008-2009 and 2009-2010.
At least 760 deaths were recorded in 1663 terrorism acts in southwestern province of Balochistan.
Government officials consider Taliban forces as responsible for unrest in Balochistan but at the same time nationalist forces are also found to be involved in terrorist attacks around the province.
Eastern Pakistani province of Punjab also became a target of terrorism during the last two years as militants carried out 27 terrorist attacks, killing 605 people.
Malik also told the upper house that the government banned four outfits including Lashkar-e-Islami, Ansarul Islam, Haji Namdar group and Tehrik-e-Taliban Punjab after getting authentic proves of their involvement in terrorist attacks around the country during the last three years.
