US President Barack Obama arrived late Tuesday in Afghanistan, in an unannounced trip on the eve of the anniversary of the killing of terrorist leader Osama bin Laden in Pakistan, reporters travelling with the president said.

Obama was to make a live address to US television audiences at 7:30 pm (2330) from Afghanistan, dpa reported.

Earlier Tuesday, Chinese news agency Xinhua reported that Obama was in Afghanistan, but the White House told dpa that the president was not there. Security restraints barred the press corps travelling with Obama from announcing his whereabouts until after he had landed safely.

Obama was expected to sign a strategic partnership agreement with Afghan President Hamid Karzai, after the deal was agreed in recent weeks.
