Azerbaijan President Gives Consent to Shorten Election Campaign

Azerbaijan, Baku, 30 May /corr. Trend I.Alizade / The President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, gave his consent to shorten the election campaign from four months to 75 days, Shahin Aliyev, the Head of Department of Legislation and Juridical Examination of Azerbaijani Presidential Administration, said during Azerbaijan Parliament's discussions on the project of annexes and amendments to the Electoral Code on 30 May.

According to him, after the law draft on shortening the election campaign from four months to two months, which was devised by the Parliamentary Commission on Legal Policy and State Establishment, was received by the Presidential Administration, it was discussed and reported to the President. 

According to Aliyev, it was decided during discussions to shorten the election campaign that it will limit the campaign in certain extent.

"Therefore, a decision was made to shorten the period of the election campaign from four months to not two months, but 75 days. Of them, four weeks are period of election propaganda and the remaining part is envisaged for nomination. This period will allow an opportunity to the candidates to hold their platforms. The period of the election campaign does not make up four months in any developed democratic countries," Aliyev said.

Today the Parliament of Azerbaijan commenced discussions on changes to the Election Code and Law on Freedom of Assembly, a source at Press Service of the Parliament reported to Trend . 

The projects of annexes and amendments to the Electoral Code and Law on Freedom of Assembly have been devised by the Government of Azerbaijan, and the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe gave references regarding the law drafts.
