Azerbaijan, Baku, Feb. 17 / Trend A.Taghiyeva /

Syrian-Iranian cooperation in the electricity sphere will not affect import of the Turkish electricity, chairman of the board, secretary general of the Turkish Electricity Trading and Contracting Company (TETAS) Hacı Duran Gokkaya told Trend on Friday.

"Turkey is one of the main exporters of electricity to Syria. The Syrian economy will signifantly suffer with the Turkish supplies," Mr Gokkaya said.

He noted Turkey monthly supplies 232.2 million KW/h of electricity to Syria and these supplies are very important for Syria.

Earlier Syrian minister for electricity Imad Khamis and Iranian energy minister Majid Namjoo signed an agreement on construction in Syria of power station with capacity of 450 MW.

The sides also agreed on construction of wind power plant.

Mr Gokkaya said these agreements will not affect import of Turkish electricity to Syria since all work on construction of the station won't be competed earlier than 28 months.

"This is step of Syria aimed at future," he said.

Mr Gokkaya pointed out to the fact that in the region, namely in Syria, Iraq and Lebanon, there is a problem of sharp shortage of electricity, and in this situation, the rejection of Turkish imports is not possible.

"Lebanon has repeatedly appealed to Turkey for import of Turkish electricity. The Turkish side didn't consider this issue because of unprofitability of supplies to Lebanon," Mr Gokkaya said.

Iran and Syria also agreed to create the most powerful in the Islamic world energy system which will link energy systems of Iran, Iraq, Lebanon and Syria.

Implementation of this project will give opportunity to interchange energy at capacity of 1,600 MW daily.
