Azerbaijani IT sector (January-August 2017)

Free Wi-Fi became available in one of Baku’s parks. Baku Telephone Communication LLC expanded free Wi-Fi in Park of Officers. Currently, the territory of the Icherisheher State Historical and Architectural Reserve, the Seaside National Park, the park of the Heydar Aliyev Center, the Winter Park and Sahil, Akhundov, Sabir and Khagani parks are covered by free Wi-Fi. After the service was launched, about 400,000 connections have been fixed in these territories.

Azerbaijan’s postal operator Azerpost LLC has installed new multifunctional payment terminals e-GovPay. Currently, the terminals are installed in the "Sebeke" centers of the postal operator located in the Yasamal, Khazar and Binagadi districts of Baku, as well as in Azerpost building. It is also possible to pay for communication services, utility bills, Internet fee, etc. via those terminals. The number of terminals will increase as new "Sebeke" centers are opened. In the near future another center will be opened in Yasamal district. The postal operator is also preparing for opening the centers in Sabunchu district of Baku and Sumgayit.

- The Azerbaijani state Internet provider launches the "safe Internet" service. The "safe Internet" service will be available to users of the BakinterNet state Internet provider. It will protect the younger generation from undesirable websites, restricting access to certain digital content (web pages containing information for adults, gambling, bad language, information promoting violence, etc.). Users will get access only to reliable Internet sites that have been filtered and have only useful information. Currently, the ‘SAF - secure Internet’ content filtering service is available for users of the AztelekomNet state-owned Internet provider.

According to the Azerbaijani State Statistics Committee, information and communication services worth 1,109.9 million manat were rendered for Azerbaijan's population and organizations in January-August 2017, which is by 5.1 percent more than in January-August 2016.

Some 81.1 percent of income received through the communication sector accounted for the non-state enterprises during the reporting period.

Around 72.3 percent of the total volume of information and communication services accounted for the services rendered to the population.

Mobile communication market

The revenues obtained from mobile services reached 552.8 million manat in Azerbaijan in January-August 2017 or by 2.4 percent more than in the same period of 2016.

At the same time, the revenues of the mobile sector are equal to 49.8 percent of revenues obtained from the entire telecommunications market.

Operating system market

Android is the most popular operating system in Azerbaijan. As of September 1, 2017, it ranks first with a 47.4 percent share on the operating system market, which is by 20.7 percent more than in the same period of 2016.

Android’s share increased by 10.7 percent on the Azerbaijani operating system market in January-August 2017.

A Microsoft Windows market share decreased by 8.7 percent in Azerbaijan in January-August 2017.

Microsoft ranks second on the operating system market with a 36.9 percent share.

A Windows share on the Azerbaijani operating system market reduced by 12.7 percent in January-August 2017 compared to the same period of 2016.

iOS with a 8.87 percent share ranked third, followed by X operating system – 2.14 percent, less known operating systems- 1.78 percent, Series 40 operating system – 0.96 percent. iOS market share decreased by 15.2 percent compared to early 2017.

PC market

As of January-August 2017, the sale of notebooks and netbooks increased by 5 percent in Azerbaijan, the Global Stats statistical center said.

As of September 1, 2017, the market share of notebooks reached 56.2 percent in Azerbaijan, which is by 11 percent more than in the same period of 2016.

A 4.7 percent decrease in desktop computer sales was observed in the country as of January-August 2017.

The market share of desktop computers in Azerbaijan reached 40.5 percent as of late August 2017, which is by 10.7 percent less than in the same period of 2016.

The market share of tablet computers in Azerbaijan ranked third and reached 3.2 percent.

The market share of tablet computers decreased by 17 percent in Azerbaijan as of January-August 2017 and by almost 19 percent less than in the same period of 2016.

Social networks

According to Global Stats center, Facebook users’ activity decreased by 25.8 percent in January-August 2017.

As of September 1, 2017, Facebook's share in the Azerbaijani social media market amounted to 65.3 percent, which is by 21 percent less than in the same period of 2016. By popularity Facebook ranks first in the Azerbaijani social media market.

YouTube with a market share of 14.1 percent ranks second. YouTube users’ activity increased by over 27 times in January-August 2017.

By popularity Twitter social network ranks third. Twitter users’ activity increased by over 2.3 times in January-August 2017. As of September 1, 2017, Twitter’s market share was 8.7 percent, which is by 24.3 percent more than as of September 1, 2016.

Pinterest social network with a market share of 5.11 percent ranks fourth, followed by Instagram social network – 2.91 percent, V Kontakte – 1.19 percent, Tumblr – 1.12 percent and others.
