The UN Security Council was told Wednesday that international envoy Kofi Annan demanded that the Syrian government completely change its military tactics during his visit to Damascus and conversation with President Bashar al-Assad earlier this week, dpa reported.
Diplomats who attended a briefing of the 15-member council, said Annan's deputy, Jean Marie Guehenno, said al-Assad was asked to try to regain the trust of the Syrian people by changing the tactics of his army, allowing full humanitarian access and releasing political prisoners.
Guehenno spoke via video link from Geneva on the situation in Syria.
