One man died in an incident near a football stadium in Buenos Aires, just before the match between the Argentine clubs Velez Sarsfield and San Lorenzo, dpa reported.

The man, 36, was a San Lorenzo fan, according to health authorities and San Lorenzo officials.

Velez Sarsfield fans reportedly ambushed and stoned the buses on which San Lorenzo fans arrived at the stadium.

Police used rubber bullets to break up the fight, and according to some media reports a blow from a police officer's club may have caused the death of the man. There was no immediate confirmation of the cause of death.

Five police officers were said to have been injured in the melees.

After the incident, the match started normally, but play was called off just seven minutes into the first half, when San Lorenzo fans broke the fence separating them from the pitch, and the safety of players could no longer be guaranteed.
