Iran imported 28,800 tons of tea, valued at $141 million, for the first nine months of the current Iranian calendar year, which began on March 20, 2013, ILNA reported, citing data released by the Iranian Customs Administration.
The value of the imported tea rose by 52 percent compared to the same period of last year.
Iran has assured India it will include Indian tea in the top category of import items. Iran presently imports 11 million kg tea from India annually, according to the Economic Times.
In April 2012, Standard Media reported that efforts of Kenya to open a tea market in Iran have paid off with increased exports. In January 2012, exports to Iran grew by 1271 per cent compared to the corresponding period of last year.
In February 2012, exports to the country grew by 113 per cent compared to the same period of last year, an increase from 124,080kg to 263,718kg, according to the latest tea market report by Tea Board of Kenya (TBK).
