BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 18. Tajikistan and the United Nations discussed prospects for expanding cooperation on international and regional issues.

This was reflected in the statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan, following a meeting between Tajikistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN in Vienna and senior UN officials.

Tajikistan’s Permanent Representative Manuchehr Jobirov met with Monica Juma, Director-General of the United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV) and Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), in Vienna on August 14.

The sides exchanged views on the current state of cooperation between Tajikistan and UNOV, as well as the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, according to Tajikistan’s Foreign Ministry.

The meeting focused on prospects for further developing cooperation and strengthening engagement between Tajikistan and the two UN bodies.

The talks provided an opportunity to review existing areas of cooperation and consider potential avenues for expanding interaction on issues of mutual interest.

UNOV serves as a major UN hub in Vienna, while UNODC works with member states on preventing and combating crime, corruption and illicit drug trafficking, as well as strengthening criminal justice systems and international cooperation.

For Tajikistan, cooperation with UNODC is particularly relevant to efforts aimed at strengthening regional and international mechanisms for addressing transnational threats and enhancing cooperation with international organizations.

The meeting also reflects Tajikistan’s continued engagement with UN institutions based in Vienna and its efforts to maintain regular diplomatic dialogue on issues of international concern.

“The sides exchanged views on the current state and prospects for developing cooperation between Tajikistan and UNOV and UNODC,” Tajikistan’s Foreign Ministry said.

The officials reaffirmed their interest in maintaining dialogue and exploring new opportunities for cooperation.

The meeting concluded with both sides expressing readiness to continue engagement and further strengthen cooperation between Tajikistan and the United Nations institutions in Vienna.
