The United States Monday lifted financial sanctions on the Libyan foreign minister Musa Kusa, who defected to Britain last week, dpa reported.
Kusa's defection proved the effectiveness of financial sanctions "to apply pressure against individuals," said David Cohen, a Treasury Department official responsible for terrorism and financial intelligence.
Because Kusa had severed ties with the regime of Libyan leader Moamer Gaddafi, "the United States is lifting sanctions" against him, Cohen said in a statement.
