German biathlon queen Magdalena Neuner came from behind on Sunday to claim her second gold and third medal overall at the Vancouver Olympics, in the mass start race, dpa reported.

Neuner, 23, overtook Russian Olga Zaitseva shortly after the final shooting portion to win the 12.5-kilometres race in 35 minutes 19.6 seconds with two penalty loops.

Zaitseva salvaged silver, 5.5 seconds behind with one missed target, in a fierce battle with German Simone Hauswald, who took bronze with two penalty loops 7.3 seconds adrift.

Neuner had earlier won pursuit gold and sprint silver at Whistler Olympic Park. She trailed in 17th place after the first shooting on Sunday, but then moved up en route to another gold.

Olga Medvedtseva of Russia, who had led into the final shooting, had to settle for fourth although she was the only of the 30 starters to shoot clean.

Swedish World Cup leader Helena Jonsson of Sweden missed a medal again, but 10th place was her best result at the Games after previous disappointing showings culminating in 49th in the 15km.
