A suicide bomber killed the police chief of the northern Afghan province of Kunduz and two of his bodyguards on Thursday, officials said.

Abdul Rahman Sayedkhili was making an evening visit to an area in the provincial capital, also called Kunduz, when the bomber detonated his explosives, said Anwar Jakdelak, the provincial governor, dpa reported.

"Sayedkhili and two of his bodyguards were martyred and their bodies have been brought to the hospital," Humayun Khamosh, head of the provincial hospital, told the German Press Agency dpa.

Eight others, including provincial deputy police chief Abdul Rahman Aqtash, were injured in the attack, he said.

Taliban militants are still active in Kunduz despite a major NATO- led operation earlier this year that pushed the insurgents out of several districts.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for Thursday's bombing, but the attack bore the hallmark of Taliban militants who have been behind numerous assaults in the province.

Last month, a suicide bomber killed Abdul Wahid Omarkhel, the chief of the Kunduz's Chardarah district, while the former provincial governor Mohammad Omar was among at least 20 people killed in a Taliban suicide bombing in October last year.
