Unidentified gunmen shot dead five people near a religious seminary in the Pakistani port city of Karachi Saturday evening, taking the death toll to 15 in incidents of firing in one day, police said, IRNA reported.

A police officer said the gunmen, riding motorcycles, sprayed bullets at the people taking tea on a roadside hotel in Gulshan-e-Iqbal area.

Students of the religious schools were among the dead, police officer, Asim Qaim Khani told reporters. He said six other people were injured in the attack.

The gunmen fled after the attack, which created panic forcing the people to close down markets. Students of the seminary came out and started protest against the incident. The bodies and injured were shifted to the city's Jinnah hospital.

No group claimed responsibility. The police described the incident as part of the target attacks, which have gripped the city for several weeks.

Earlier 10 people lost lives in firing incidents in different areas of Karachi, according to police officials.

Two others were killed near Saifee College in the North Nazimabad area.

Interior Minister Rehman Malik told the National Assembly last week that nearly 300 people have been killed in target attacks in Karachi this year.

Giving details he said a total of 1,363 people have lost their lives at the hands of target killers during the past five years.

Giving a breakdown of the figure, Malik had said that 104 people had been killed in year 2008, 160 in 2009, 373 in 2010 and 478 in 2011.
