The United Nations Security Council condemned the violence in Egypt and called on all parties to stop any acts of aggression, the president of the council said Thursday after an emergency meeting, dpa reported.
Maria Cristina Perceval, Argentina's representative and current president of the Security Council, said the 15-member council discussed the Egyptian crisis in the meeting during which members were briefed by UN Deputy Secretary General Jan Eliasson.
"The view of the council members is that it is important to end violence in Egypt, that the parties exercise maximum restraint," Perceval said.
In her national capacity, Perceval condemned the military takeover of the country, calling it "a coup d'etat."
