Press council: Azerbaijani court dismisses newspaper appeal

Azerbaijan, Baku, Apr. 2 / Trend A.Huseynbala /

The Azerbaijani Press Council denied rumors of having satisfied the Tazadlar newspaper's appeal in court.

The information circulating in media is false," the council told Trend .

About 4,000 media outlets are registered in Azerbaijan. Only 600 operate. Roughly 400 newspapers and magazines are published. Eight state, 14 regional and 13 cable channels operate. There are approximately 50 electronic media outlets, roughly 20 news agencies and numerous Internet resources in Azerbaijan.

In a case overseen by Judge Ikram Shirinov, the Baku Nasimi District Court threw out the newspaper's appeal against the Azerbaijani Press Council.

The newspaper protested the council's decision to "blacklist" the newspaper in October 2009 after the publication made libelous statements about Turkish Ambassador in Baku Hulusi Kilic.
