BAKU, Azerbaijan, March 30. The transit of products through the Astara railway terminal of Gilan province, located in northern Iran, increased by 36 percent in the last Iranian year (from March 21, 2023, through March 19, 2024) compared to the previous year (from March 21, 2022, through March 20, 2023), Director General of Iran's Northern Railway Authority Gholam Hossein Valadi said, Trend reports.
According to Valadi, the volume of cargo transported through
Iran's Astara railway terminal last year was around 299,000
(298,787) tons, and the primary products transported include flour,
millet, wheat and barley, glass, lumber and wood materials, and
others.
Last year, around 184,000 tons of merchandise were exported to
Azerbaijan via Iran's Astara railway terminal. Product exports
declined by 8 percent compared to the previous year. Last year,
Iran sent 199,000 tons of merchandise to Azerbaijan via the Astara
railway station.
"Iran mainly exported various fruits, onions, cement, chemicals, ceramics, iron ore, mineral water, etc. to Azerbaijan through the Astara railway terminal," he said.
The Iranian official noted that last year, Iran's imports of products through the Astara railway terminal amounted to about 232,000 tons. This is 53 percent more than a year earlier. Last year, the country's imports of products through Iran's Astara rail terminal amounted to about 152,000 tons.
To note, the length of railway lines in Iran is currently 14,984 kilometers. There are 993 locomotives, 29,950 freight cars, and 2,178 passenger wagons operating on Iran's railroad lines.
