A hotel which was under repair partially collapsed Tuesday on the Spanish holiday island of Majorca, killing four construction workers, officials said.

Four bodies were found in the rubble. The victims were reportedly Spanish and Moroccan nationals. Four other people who were also working inside the building were injured, according to dpa.

The collapse affected the three top floors of the nine-floor seaside hotel in Cala Ratjada in the north-east of the island. The hotel had been closed for repairs.

The company doing the repairs had been denied the permit to carry them out and had been ordered to stop them, according to officials.

Heavy rains were thought to have contributed to the collapse.

Earlier on Tuesday, a house collapsed in Muro west of Cala Ratjada. The accident caused slight injuries to one of the three homeless people who were staying inside the building.

Flooding meanwhile prompted the evacuation of about 100 people in the Palma de Majorca area.
