Former Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze sharply criticized the Georgian authorities for signing a readmission agreement with the EU. This agreement will "dramatically worsen the situation in the country," he said in an interview with the Georgian newspaper Asaval-Dasavali.
"Many of our fellow citizens are making a living on the money sent by family members who left the country for the EU to work, and this agreement is directed toward them," Shevardnadze said, stressing that now the EU will be able to deport Georgian citizens without any problems.
"What can the authorities offer them here? Nothing. They will be unemployed and their families will starve, which will hardly help stability in the country," he said.
According to Shevardnadze, he refused to sign such an agreement during his presidency in the interests of Georgian illegal migrants.
Shevardnadze also criticized the authorities for their intention to bring South African Boers to the country.
"If the authorities have land and money, then let them hand it out to our farmers, but not to the Boers," he said.
A simplified visa regime between Georgia and the EU entered into force on March 1.
