The European Union (EU) stands for extension of the project to support reforms in the justice sector in Azerbaijan till 2020.
This was stated on Wednesday by the head of the EU mission in Azerbaijan, Ambassador Roland Kobia during his speech at the round table on 'The Law of the Azerbaijani Republic on the rights and freedoms of persons held in custody, and control of ill-treatment', organized by the Azerbaijan Lawyers Confederation within a joint program of the Council of Europe and the European Union 'Strengthening the fight against abuse and impunity'.
Kobia said that as a part of the project between the European Union and the Ministry of Justice, implementation of which began last year, some 14.5 million euros were allocated to the reforms in the justice sector, six million manats of these funds account for the reforms carried out in the Prison Service.
This amount will be spent on trainings for employees of the Prison Service, the study of the European Union documents in this field, bringing the national legislation in line with these documents.
Kobia said that the project will be completed in late 2013, however the EU is negotiating with the Azerbaijani government to extend the project till 2020.
It should be noted that the abovementioned project is carried out to support reforms in the activities of the Justice Academy, the Prison Service and the regional departments of justice.
