Azerbaijan, Baku / Trend corr.V.Mammadov / Faiza Aliyeva, the Director of the Science Research Institute of Midwifery and Gynecology, stated during the three-day workshop 'Basis of antenatal and perinatal service" held in the Ganja-based National Center on health and family planning on 9 July that the quantity of deaths amongst women in childbirth had increased. In 2005, for every 100,000 women in childbirth, 33 had died. This figure rose to 40 in 2006.

According to Aliyeva, some 19 deaths occurred per 100,000 within five months. Aliyeva believes that the main reason is the lack of medical care for pregnant women.

"Monitoring has allowed us to conclude that in many cases pregnant women refuse to be registered with state institutions. This is one of the essential requirements in many countries. By refusing registration in state institutions they are usually examined in private hospitals," the director stressed.
