Iran will need $330 million in order to diminish non-revenue water (NRW) by one percent, said Hamid Reza Tashayoi, an official with Iran's water treatment organization.
He also said the country's sixth five-year development plan (which starts in one year) has provisioned $390 million for each percent reducing NRW, IRNA news agency reported May 16.
He further said that Kerman Province, as well as the cities of Esfahan, Mashhad, and Bushehr are in critical conditions regarding resources.
"We need to reduce domestic and agricultural water consumption by 20 percent," Tashayoi stated.
Iranian officials had earlier said this summer seven provinces would face water shortage.
Physical water loss (through leakage, etc.) in Iran constitutes 13.3 percent of the total volume of treated water. This is while apparent loss (through theft, miscounting, etc.) amounts to 9.8 percent.
