Azerbaijan and Germany can be strategic partners in the field of alternative and renewable energy sources, Minister of Industry and Energy Natiq Aliyev said.

"Perhaps, we will cooperate. Azerbaijan and Germany can be strategic partners in the field of alternative energy sources", Aliyev said during a conference on alternative energy sources in Baku today.

The World Council for Renewable Energy head Hermann Scheer, who is also the initiator of the World Agency for Alternative Energy Sources and a member of the Bundestag of Germany will participate at the conference, to be held April 5-6.

Aliyev said that Germany is a leader in Europe and in the world on the proportion of the alternative energy sources in the total energy production. Germany is also leader in the development of the necessary equipment and technologies for non-conventional energy sources. Until 2020, the country plans to increase the share of renewable energy from the total energy production to 48 percent. Most European countries aim at achieving a 20 percent share by 2020.

Aliyev said that Azerbaijan is taking its first steps towards the development of alternative and renewable energy sources now. If the country brings this figure to 3-5 percent from the current 1 percent in two years, it will be a significant indicator.

"But all depends on how fast we will move, how we will build this base", Aliyev said.
